New publisher named at Danbury News-Times

DANBURY, CT (Nov. 15, 2005) – Sam Gett, who has been a publisher for Ottaway Newspapers, Inc. in Minnesota and Pennsylvania, will become president and publisher of the Danbury News-Times at the start of 2006.

The announcement was made today by John N. Wilcox, president and chief operating officer of Ottaway Newspapers, Inc. Gett, now publisher of the Pocono Record in Stroudsburg, PA, replaces Wayne J. Shepperd who retired this summer. He will be succeeded in Stroudsburg by James Maxwell, corporate advertising director for Ottaway.

“Sam’s extensive background in community newspaper publishing will serve the News-Times and the greater Danbury community well,” said Wilcox, who once was general manager of the newspaper. “Sam is the type of leader who will quietly but surely take a fine media company to the next level of excellence.”

Gett noted that “The News-Times enjoys a long, rich tradition of serving the communities in Fairfield County and I'm excited about the professional and personal opportunities that await in Danbury. At the same time, leaving the Pocono Record is not easy. I've enjoyed working with the very capable team here and wish them well in the years ahead.”

Gett, 44, began his newspaper career as an advertising sales intern for The Herald in Sharon, Pa. He joined The Herald’s sales team full-time in 1983 and later worked as a classified sales representative before completing Ottaway’s management development program in 1987.

He served as general manager of Allied News, a weekly in Grove City, Pa., for two years and of the weekly Garner News in North Carolina for four. In 1994, he became assistant to the publisher of the Daily News-Sun in Sun City, Ariz., where he was later promoted to assistant general manager and served as acting publisher in 1997. He was named general manager of the Joplin Globe in Missouri later that year and in 1998 was promoted to publisher of The Free Press in Mankato. He became publisher in Stroudsburg in June 2004.

Gett has a bachelor’s degree from Penn State and an MBA in marketing from Youngstown State University in Ohio. He has been active with the United Way and chambers of commerce in several of the communities where he worked, including Stroudsburg. He is active in the Pocono Family YMCA and the Pocono Inclusion Group. In Minnesota, he was a member of the Greater Mankato Economic Development Council, the Twin Valley Council of Boy Scouts and the Mankato Area YMCA. He is married with two children.
